These complications may reach a level of endangering the lives of both mother and baby, and require clarification and treatment while the mother is hospitalized. Some women with high-risk pregnancies are referred for hospitalization by their gynecologists, and some are admitted to the unit from the emergency room, following complications that have manifested during their pregnancy.
If the likelihood of complications developing is higher than average–whether due to medical conditions existing in the mother prior to her pregnancy, or because of problems arising during the pregnancy itself – then the pregnancy is considered high-risk. The complications constituting a high-risk pregnancy may include but are not limited to the following indications:
